The city  was once the capital of the ancient, Buddhist kingdom of Srivijaya that controlled a large part of what is now Malaysia and Indonesia. Palembang is also the origin of Parameswara, founder of the Malacca Sultanate, also the home of Songket traditional cloth that is famous worlwide.

Palembang's economy has been developed significantly since it became a host for a National Sporting Event in 2004.

Ampera Bridge

The bridge that spread  above Musi River is the main icon of Palembang city. It was built on 1962 - 1965 and it is 1.2km length amd has 78m high  twin towers. It is one of the preserved national heritage vistas.
